A founder note on agent governance, audit trails, and why a Melbourne team is building an AI Operating System for regulated enterprises.
The 3 a.m. question every CISO is already asking
Almost every enterprise leader I've spoken to in the last year has asked me a version of the same question.
"What happens when this agent makes a mistake at 3 a.m. on a customer record?"
Most AI agent platforms cannot answer it.
The honest answer is usually that nobody knows. The agent did something. It called a tool, touched a system, changed a record, sent a message, or kicked off a workflow. Afterwards, no one can reconstruct who authorised it, which policy applied, what evidence was captured, or whether the action should have been allowed at all.
That's the gap we're building Agento to close.
What is Agento?
Agento is an enterprise AI Operating System (AIOS) for regulated businesses. Compliance, operations, and engineering teams get one platform to deploy AI agents that handle multi-step work across enterprise systems. Policy-as-code governance is enforced on every step, workflows are durable, and the platform captures audit-ready evidence for every action.
Put another way: Agento is what lets a CISO finally say yes to agentic AI.
It isn't a chatbot, copilot, or RPA suite. It's the runtime and control plane those products quietly need underneath them to operate safely inside an enterprise.
Why governance-first AI, and why now
I've spent years working in regulated, process-heavy environments. Software in those settings doesn't succeed because the demo looks good. It succeeds when people trust it in production.
The lesson from that work is simple. A system you can't audit isn't a system you can trust, and a system you can't trust won't scale.
Agentic AI is at that inflection point right now in 2026. Foundation models are finally strong enough for serious work, orchestration patterns have matured, and the tooling around connectors and UI operators is good enough that agents can actually perform real work across enterprise systems.
What's still missing is the operating system layer underneath all of that. Something that can answer:
"This agent is allowed to do this action, on this system, under this policy, with this approval. Here is the evidence of exactly what happened."
That's not a wrapper around a foundation model. It's an entirely different category of product.
How Agento is built: three layers
Agento has the same structural shape as a traditional operating system. There's a clean separation between what users build, how the platform mediates that work, and how execution actually happens.
Application layer
A simplified SDK and web experience for building, deploying, and managing custom agents. Common use cases include support, internal operations, compliance reviews, project workflows, and back-office tasks.
Agent Programming Interface
A governed interface that sits between agents, skills, connectors, policies, and the execution kernel. Developers can ship useful agents without bypassing enterprise controls along the way.
Kernel layer
The OS layer for AI execution. It handles durable workflow orchestration, stateful multi-agent coordination, resource allocation, task execution, approvals, evidence capture, and full auditability.
Underneath all three layers sits the infrastructure that regulated work actually requires. That includes durable state across long-running jobs, multi-agent coordination, native multi-cloud support, and secure execution across both API connectors and sandboxed UI operators. The architecture deliberately splits the control plane (governance, policies, skills, model routing, orchestration) from the execution plane (isolated connectors, operators, retrieval, evidence, logs). The two planes are designed so that they fail independently of each other and can be audited independently.
What we focus on technically
We're not building another chatbot interface. We're building the governance and execution layer that enterprise agents will run on.
Why Melbourne, and why now
We're based in Melbourne, Australia, and that's deliberate.
Australian regulated sectors are under real pressure to adopt AI while expectations keep rising under the Privacy Act, APRA CPS 230 and CPS 234, and the federal government's emerging AI assurance guidance. Strong appetite combined with strict controls is exactly the environment we wanted to build a governance-first AI platform in.
If we can build an AI Operating System that works for regulated enterprises here, with governance, traceability, and evidence built in from day one, the product will be stronger for every other market we take it to.
We're early. We're working through design-partner conversations right now. We don't claim every certification on the wall yet. What we do have is a clear thesis, a strong architecture, and a roadmap shaped by the workflows that actually break in production.
The future of enterprise AI is not autonomous chaos
Enterprises won't trust a future where agents click freely across systems, make decisions on their own, and leave behind nothing but a chat transcript.
The future of agents will need identities, permissions, policies, approvals, audit trails, evidence, and an operating system to hold all of that together. That's what we're building with Agento.
